Georgian National Ballet Sukhishvili To Bring Spectacular Celebration Of Georgian Dance At P&J Live
The legendary Georgian National Ballet Sukhishvili will grace the stage at P&J Live’s Hall C, Aberdeen on Wednesday 13 October 2027, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience one of the world’s most celebrated folk-dance companies in an unmissable evening of virtuosity, music and tradition.
Named after its founders Iliko and Nino Sukhishvili, the company remains as popular today as it was almost a century ago. The troupe is still ruled by the Sukhishvili dynasty and is now headed by the founders’ grandchildren, Iliko and Nino Sukhishvili Jr. Thanks to their dedication, the art of Georgian national dance remains at the peak of its popularity.
During the ballet’s existence, millions of people have attended its performances on the most prestigious theatre and concert stages in the world. Consequently, the Sukhishvili surname has become a symbol of virtuosity, skill and immense talent.
A captivating story of Georgia, told through a variety of unique dances, the performance pairs male and female choreography in the company’s signature style. Women in luxurious dresses move with the grace of angels as if floating above the stage, while the men perform the famous dance on the toes - a breathtaking display of strength and elegance. In Georgia it has long been considered unacceptable to kneel in front of a pretty woman, but dancing on the toes was a special chic and sophistication. They are the only men in the world who can perform standing, jumping and landing on their toes in soft leather boots - a remarkable skill they begin learning at the age of five and perfect throughout their lives.
The National Ballet of Georgia dances to its original live music, performed by the company’s own orchestra on rare instruments. The musicians use a special technique that is not taught elsewhere but is passed down from generation to generation, preserving a unique musical heritage alongside the choreography.
The Georgian National Ballet Sukhishvili began as a family enterprise, has survived communist oppression, the Cold War, the break-up of the Soviet Union and has grown into an internationally renowned company - testament to the enduring power of Georgian culture and the vision of the Sukhishvili dynasty.
Rob Wicks, Managing Director at P&J Live, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome the Georgian National Ballet Sukhishvili to P&J Live. This is a company with an extraordinary history and a reputation that spans the globe, and to bring such a visually stunning, deeply authentic show to Aberdeen is a real privilege. Audiences can expect an evening of breathtaking choreography, live music and pure energy - a true celebration of Georgian culture that I have no doubt will stay with them long after the show ends.”
